DEV2.0
What happens when Disney creates a phony band consisting of kids singing Devo covers? Surprisingly, something wonderful. Devo songs are among the best ever written, and these kids, under the direction of Devo member Gerry Casale do a fantastic job of making the songs fun and keeping them strange.
This two disc set includes a DVD with an hour and a half worth of video, including songs and interviews with the original Devo bandmembers. In a world where most kids' music is condescending and vapid, this is an instant classic. $12.97 on Amazon.com

Cute! But then, you could just play Devo's original tracks for your kids, too...
Well, that's one way to spin it. But long time spuds remember the boys from Ohio complaining long and large that they never did make much money in their prime. By rerecording their hits, whether for commercials or Disney, they don't have to split profits with the Warner Brothers clan. Perhaps this is a devolution of their principles? Now that's art!
In truth, this is the second repackaging of their songs -- Pick up a copy of their subversive E-Z listening disk (insipid muzac versions of the greatest hits) for real mayhem.
While I do have a life outside of the spud boys, it just so happens that I'm compiling a list of their videos for another blog. I ran into this gem -- The Wipeouters is an earlier Devo project to put their words into the mouths of youths. In this case though, Devo plays and sings, so the Wipeouters are merely mimes.

Did you hear that Disney is doing the same thing with the Go-Gos? It's gonna be called the Po-Gos! This is from Jane Weidlin's blog:
“Speaking of telling all, i guess Disney let the cat out of the bag. The project the Go-Go's have been writing for is The Po-Go's. It's going to be an all girl group ages 9 to 13. They'll do our hits and new songs we are writing for them. And we'll be producing them too. Right now it's just an album project, but if it goes well it could turn into a TV show or a movie or who knows what! We get to audition and choose the girls. i really hope we can find girls who are musicians, i have no idea what's out there. I know some fans have expressed their dissatisfaction about the band doing this. i feel like it's such a joy to do something new, something different. I love kids and this is as close as i'll ever get to having any of my own, so i hope people don't begrudge us this interesting and fun opportunity.”
